Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri emerges first African to qualify for Quarterfinals in Men’s single table tennis event


Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri has set a new African record as the first African ever to make it to the quarterfinals of the men’s single table tennis event at the Olympics.

Quadri was at par with Nigeria’s Segun Toriola who has been in seven Olympic games, and made it to the fourth round of the 2008 Beijing Olympic championship.
Quadri beat Germany’s Boll Timo, 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the game.
Quadri won the first three sets 12-10 12-10, 12-5 in 10 minutes, and lost the next two to Timo, who is ranked number 10 in Rio, 11-3, 11-5.
Quadri sealed his entry into the quarterfinals by winning the sixth set 11-9.
He will now face world number one, China’s Ma Long.
